About the Book

book cover

“READY PLAYER ONE” is the glowing screen phrase that greeted players of 1980s-era arcade video games—and the title of the best-selling 2011 novel by author Ernest Cline.

A sci-fi novel and suspense thriller filled with ‘80s nostalgia, Ready Player One has become both a cult favorite and a bestseller with broad appeal. Set in Oklahoma in 2044, the world is so dysfunctional that nearly everyone spends most of their time in the OASIS: a virtual reality online world. The story follows Wade Watts and his (online) friends on their (online) hunt to solve three clues to puzzles entwined in 1980s pop culture, find the “Easter egg” hidden somewhere in the OASIS universe, and win the ultimate prize: ownership and control of the OASIS and its founder’s fortune.

An adventure novel featuring an underdog protagonist who takes on a heroic quest, opposed by powerful, greedy bad guys, Ready Player One is filled with enough action, video gaming and futuristic technology to enthrall readers under 30, and frosted with nostalgic 1980s references that will leave older readers reminiscing over the music, films, video games, and movies of their youth. The movie version, directed by Steven Spielberg, hits theaters on March 30, 2018.

Reviews

“Layered with inside jokes and sly references that will appeal to a wide range of readers, READY PLAYER ONE is a smart, funny thriller that both celebrates and critiques online culture. The author is accomplished at developing suspense …. The puzzles are intriguing, the action is intense, and the payoff at the end is worth all the buildup.”

Michael Berry, Common Sense Media

 “A winning, geeked-out page-turner . . . ridiculously fun and large hearted”

Michael Schaub, National Public Radio

“At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut – part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera ….”

Penguin Random House

“Ready Player One made nonreaders pick up a book …. [It] is such a unique and fulfilling experience, filled with twists and turns that beg readers to read “just one more chapter,” before turning the lights off at night.”

Steven Petite, Huffington Post

“An exuberantly realized, exciting, and sweet-natured cyber-quest. . .Cline’s imaginative and rollicking coming-of-age geek saga has a smash-hit vibe.”

Donna Seaman, Booklist

“[An] ardent fantasy artifact about fantasy culture … witty ….[A] perfectly accessible narrative…. [T]he breadth and cleverness of Mr. Cline’s imagination gets this daydream pretty far.”

Janet Maslin, New York Times Book Review

"This adrenaline shot of uncut geekdom, a quest through a virtual world, is loaded with enough 1980s nostalgia to please even the most devoted John Hughes fans… .”
