Our Family Tree - Going out on a Limb...is the theme of the 92nd annual Coronado Flower Show to be held on Saturday April 8 and Sunday April 9 at Spreckels Park.

The largest tented flower show in the nation, the Coronado Flower Show is presented by the City of Coronado and the Coronado Floral Association. The first show was held in 1922 and is Coronado’s longest running tradition. Flower Show Co-Chairman Laura Crenshaw advises that, “Now is the time to prepare your gardens and front entry for viewing and to begin the process of selecting your horticultural entries.”

Home Front Judging (dates TBA), is when teams of judges walk each block of the community and judge each home’s front yard appearance, awarding ribbons for Honorable Mention, Yellow, Red, and the ever-coveted Blue. Container grown plant exhibits must have been in the possession of the entrant for at least 90 days and combination plantings must grow together for at least six weeks. Crenshaw advised that potted plants should be rotated to ensure they are centered within the pot, and that pots should be washed and free of debris when submitted to the Show.

Pride in our Coronado community ignited during the Roaring Twenties and has been strong ever since. “Home front judging and the flower show are galvanizing forces in our community and the end result is Coronado is absolutely beautiful every spring. “Get involved and join the fun!” Crenshaw urges. There are several ways to get involved:

  1. Plan to enter the show, either in horticulture or a design category.
  2. Volunteer to be a home front judge.
  3. Volunteers are also needed as show docents, at the gate, in sections, and in receiving entries.

To volunteer, go to www.coronadoflowershow.com, click on the CONTACT menu item, and submit your information. By mid-February the website will also feature the 2017 Flower Show Schedule.

Coronado Flower Show weekend also includes the annual Coronado Library Bookfaire, Art in the Park (both in Spreckels Park), and Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast at Village Elementary School. This weekend is when Coronado looks its very best - so invite your friends and family to visit and join the fun!
