The City of Coronado recently completed Phase 2 of “Art Outside the Box” wrapping six Caltrans signal boxes on the Silver Strand Route 75 with graphic art film. The six boxes are located adjacent to the six traffic signals between the Naval Amphibious Base western border and the entrance to the Coronado Cays. The boxes are wrapped in images of flora and fauna indigenous to the Strand, taken by local photographers Brian Lippe, Daron Case and Jody Esquer. The box at the entrance to the Cays features a silhouette of Lippe with his camera, a regular sight during his many years as a resident of the Cays, taken by his friend and fellow-photographer Daron Case. Brian lost a courageous battle against cancer last year, but during his treatment he often ventured out and captured the beauty of the Strand with his camera. He donated his photography for use in this project.

The project completes the public art project initiated in 2016 to wrap 14 Caltrans signal boxes on the Strand and in the village on SR75. The program features local artists and required reviews and approvals from the Public Art Program and the Cultural Arts Commission, members of the Silver Strand Beautification Committee, Caltrans as well as the City Council.
