Philosopher George Santayana wrote, “The earth has music for those who listen.” Twenty-four dancers in the Conservatory of Classical and Contemporary Dance at the Coronado School of the Arts have been listening ... and creating dances.
On December 14 and 15, the pre-professional program presents a concert called Forces of Nature, featuring dances inspired by earth, air, water, and fire. Fourteen student choreographers and six faculty choreographers draw upon the philosophical ideas and movement potential found in our natural world.
Highlights include faculty Mikeal Villela’s contemporary jazz dance on the primordial combustion of elements at the world’s inception, and faculty Trystan Loucado’s recreation of Joseph Mazilier’s classical ballet Paquita. The Dance Conservatory's new director, Gina Bolles Sorensen, weaves her experience as a professional modern choreographer with her interest in theater and art to create a production rich with imagery and associations. CoSA’s Conservatory of Digital Arts, under the direction of Riana Bucceri, collaborates to present short films on the elements between dances.
