Road Tripping in Aotearoa, New Zealand: Home of Maori and Hobbits

On Tuesday, May 21 at 6:00 P.M., join us at the Spreckels Center to listen to Coronado’s Bob and Berie Grobe tell us about their 4,000-mile adventure from the top of New Zealand’s North Island at Cape Reinga all the way to the southern tip of South Island at Stirling Point in Bluff.  This tiny island nation is a scenic powerhouse, rivaling any of the seven continents with its beauty and diversity.  At this Armchair Travel, we’ll travel to white and black sand beaches, sweeping vineyards, sprawling glaciers, fjords, jagged peaks, glorious harbors, amazing lakes, vast rolling farmland hills, orchards, cosmopolitan cities, quaint small towns and Hobbitons.  Learn how New Zealand was formed geologically and who settled it.  Meet some of the remaining endangered indigenous bird and plant species. Learn about the vast recreational activities available, including hunting, fishing, sailing, parasailing, swimming, kayaking, jet boating, bicycling, hiking, tramping, trekking, wine tasting, helicopter touring, museum visiting, golfing, camping, lawn bowling, croquet, rugby, and all of it on a big, not small, scale.  Dine with the Grobes from farm, sea and lake to table.

May’s Armchair Travel event will be held in a new location, the John D. Spreckels Center, located at 1019 Seventh St. Light refreshments will be served from 6:00-6:30 P.M., followed by the speaker’s presentation.  This is a wonderful opportunity for community members and visitors to meet old friends and make new acquaintances with whom they share a common interest in travel. $5 for residents and nonresidents.
