Sit a Spell and Play a Tune - Coronado Rotary Plaza

Public Art

About the artist:

Sit a Spell and Play a Tune Public Art Piano in Rotary Plaza was dedicated in May 2017 and returns to the plaza for a second installation in May 2018. The piano is wrapped in iconic images of Coronado and the design was created by local artist Jody Esquer. The piano was generously funded by contributions in memory of Jim and Barbara Darnell. The piano was donated by former Coronado Fire Chief Mike Blood and the current caretaker for the piano is Coronado Historical Association.

The public pianos provide access to musical opportunity, fosters creativity through engaging artists to wrap the pianos with artistic designs, and builds a sense of community among the public and, in the process, raises awareness for public art initiatives as well as music. The pianos are a lively addition to the commercial districts and the community response to the program has been very positive.
